Dendron Swamp Natural Area Preserve
Dendron Swamp Natural Area Preserve, National Natural Landmark in Sussex County, Virginia.
The preserve encompasses 636 acres of wetlands with bald cypress and tupelo trees stretching along the Blackwater River for two miles.
The Charles C. Steirly Natural Area within the preserve received National Natural Landmark designation in 1974, protecting 19 acres of virgin forest.
The preserve functions as a critical nesting ground for great blue herons and American egrets, contributing to regional wildlife conservation.
Visitors need to contact the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation before planning a visit, as the preserve lacks public access facilities.
Several cypress trees within the preserve measure up to 200 centimeters in diameter and have existed for more than 600 years.
