Athletic Club of Columbus, Mediterranean Revival athletic club in Downtown Columbus, United States
The Athletic Club of Columbus is a six-story building with a Mediterranean-style brick and terracotta exterior on East Broad Street. It spans about 88,000 square feet and houses swimming pools, exercise rooms, squash courts, a gymnasium, basketball courts, bowling alleys, and multiple dining venues.
The Athletic Club was founded in 1912 and relocated in 1915 to its current East Broad Street location, moving from its original home in the Atlas Building. The building was designed by the architectural firm Richards, McCarty & Bulford in collaboration with Frank Packard.
The club was designed as a gathering space for Columbus's affluent society, and its Mediterranean style conveyed wealth and social standing through architectural detail. Today visitors can still see how the building's design and layout reflect this intention to create an exclusive retreat.
The building is easy to navigate due to its clear six-story structure and centralized location on East Broad Street. The variety of amenities under one roof makes it simple for visitors to move between different activity areas.
The building originally featured separate entrances for male and female members, with the women's entrance positioned specifically on the western side of the structure. This physical separation reflected the social norms of that era.
