Naiads, Public sculpture at Capitol Square, Columbus, United States
Naiads is a bronze sculpture featuring two female figures with raised arms positioned above a fountain decorated with bird and fish sculptures. The installation uses flowing water to create an interactive relationship between the bronze forms and the fountain elements.
Artist Jack Greaves created this outdoor installation in 1984 during a period of downtown expansion in Columbus. The work contributed to the artistic development of the growing urban core.
The sculpture represents water nymphs from Greek mythology, connecting ancient themes with contemporary urban art through its fountain design and metalwork.
The sculpture sits near government buildings and shopping areas downtown, making it easily accessible on foot. The public location serves as a good meeting point, and daytime visits work best to see the bronze surfaces in good light.
Water circulates continuously around the raised arms of the figures, creating constant movement between the static bronze and flowing element. This design approach makes the sculpture visually different at various times of day and lighting conditions.
