Fifth Third Center, Office building in Downtown Columbus, Ohio
Fifth Third Center is a 23-story office tower in downtown Columbus that uses post-modern design principles and sits on Capitol Square. The complex integrates an older Art Deco building from the 1920s into its structure, creating a unified architectural composition.
The building was completed in 1998 and integrated the Beggs Building, an Art Deco structure from 1928, into its design during construction. This approach showed how a modern project could preserve and incorporate historic structures into a new concept.
The building mixes modern office design with preserved elements from the 1920s, creating a visible contrast between old and new architecture on the square. This blend shapes how the area looks and shows how the city maintains its past while moving forward.
The building is located in downtown Columbus along East State Street within the main business district. Visitors can easily reach the site on foot and view the exterior facade that displays the transition between old and new architectural styles.
The building preserves the original Art Deco facade of the Beggs Building visibly, allowing visitors to experience two different eras of architecture in one place. This unusual combination shows how the city chose to keep its older structures rather than demolish them for new development.
