Gavel, Steel sculpture at Ohio Judicial Center, United States
The Gavel is a stainless steel sculpture approximately 30 feet long positioned in the south reflecting pool at the Ohio Judicial Center in Columbus. The artwork consists entirely of polished metal and dominates the outdoor area through its bold geometric form.
Artist Andrew F. Scott created this work in 2008 on commission from the Ohio State Bar Association for the judicial center. Its installation marked a significant addition to the courthouse grounds through a landmark artistic project.
The sculpture symbolizes legal power through its monumental size and serves as a visual landmark that defines the judicial center's public identity.
The sculpture is visible from 145 South Front Street and remains accessible throughout the day, with parking available nearby. The location is easy to reach on foot and offers clear views without special arrangements.
This work holds the world record as the largest gavel sculpture made entirely from stainless steel, representing a technical achievement in metal fabrication. Its polished surface reflects surrounding light and the water basin in ways that change throughout the day.
