Discovery Bridge, Road bridge in downtown Columbus, United States.
Discovery Bridge spans across the Scioto River, connecting downtown Columbus with the Franklinton neighborhood through five structural spans. The crossing carries six traffic lanes of U.S. Route 40 and provides dedicated pedestrian paths on both sides.
The first structure at this location was a wooden crossing opened in 1816 after Lucas Sullivant gained permission from the Ohio assembly to build a toll bridge. The modern crossing reflects decades of engineering advancement since that early connection.
Bronze medallions on the bridge display symbols related to Christopher Columbus, reflecting the city's connection to exploration history. These artworks tell the story of discovery that inspired the city's name.
The bridge is open daily to both vehicle and foot traffic, with clearly marked pedestrian paths for safe crossing between the two neighborhoods. Access is straightforward from downtown and Franklinton without any special requirements or equipment needed.
During planning, engineers evaluated over 110 different design options before selecting the final post-tensioned plate-arch system. This thorough analysis resulted in a solution that significantly reduced construction expenses.
