Scioto Mile, Urban greenway in downtown Columbus, Ohio.
The Scioto Mile Greenway stretches along the Scioto River through downtown Columbus, featuring renovated parkland, pedestrian promenades, water access points, and over twelve miles of interconnected trails designed for walking, cycling, and recreational activities.
Originally developed starting in 1976 as Columbus's first greenway trail, the Scioto Mile underwent major expansion in 2015 with a thirty-six million dollar investment that removed a low head dam and restored the river's natural flow while creating additional habitat.
The greenway serves as a central venue for community festivals, outdoor concerts, and seasonal celebrations, featuring public art installations including bronze sculptures and fountains that reflect the river's history and Columbus's commitment to cultural engagement.
The trail system provides multiple access points including North Bank Park, Bicentennial Park, and Scioto Audubon, with parking facilities available and connections to the broader Ohio to Erie Trail network for enhanced regional connectivity.
The project successfully relocated endangered mussels during construction and incorporated native plantings designed to attract pollinators, with nearly sixty percent of plant species specifically chosen to support local wildlife and improve water quality.
