Ohio Theatre, Historic theatre in downtown Columbus, United States
The Ohio Theatre is a 1928 movie palace located in downtown Columbus featuring Spanish-Baroque architectural details and ornate decorative elements. The venue seats roughly 2,779 people and showcases a grand chandelier along with elaborately embellished ceilings throughout its interior spaces.
Architect Thomas W. Lamb designed this 1928 movie palace when such theaters represented cutting-edge entertainment venues. Community members prevented its demolition in the 1960s by raising funds to restore and preserve the building for future generations.
It serves as Ohio's official state theatre, hosting over one hundred performances yearly ranging from Broadway productions to symphonic concerts. People gather here to experience both classic and contemporary works in a setting that holds deep meaning for the community.
The venue offers elevators and accessible seating areas for visitors with mobility needs along with audio description services for performances. Families with young children will find nursing stations and facilities designed for their comfort throughout the building.
Anne Dornan, one of the first women to graduate from Columbia School of Architecture, carefully selected artworks and furnishings worth around one million dollars for the theatre. Her artistic vision continues to shape how the interior spaces look and feel today.
