LeVeque Tower, Art Deco office building in Downtown Columbus, United States.
LeVeque Tower is a Streamline Moderne office building with 47 floors in downtown Columbus, rising 169 meters (555 feet) above street level. Terracotta panels cover the outer walls, and decorative sculptures line the upper stories, while a notable crown of gilded elements sits at the top.
Construction began in 1924 as headquarters for the American Insurance Union and finished in 1927, when the building ranked among the tallest in the world. Leslie LeVeque acquired the property during the economic difficulties of the 1930s and renamed it after his company.
The lobby presents polished marble columns and gilded ornaments from the late 1920s, giving visitors a sense of taste from that era. The name honors Leslie LeVeque, who saved the structure from bankruptcy during the Great Depression and later turned it into his company headquarters.
The main entrance on Broad Street leads to a central lobby, from which elevators reach the different areas inside the building. A visit works best during daylight, when the terracotta facade and sculptures show most clearly.
A computer-controlled LED system colors the exterior in different shades depending on the occasion, such as red and green for Christmas or purple for certain university celebrations. The lighting extends along the full height and often stays on late into the night.
