High and Gay Streets Historic District
High and Gay Streets Historic District, Commercial district from 1870s at High and Gay Streets intersection, Columbus, United States.
The High and Gay Streets Historic District is a commercial area with eighteen notable buildings ranging from two to ten stories tall, built in different styles like Italianate, Classical Revival, and Art Moderne. The buildings stretch from Wall Street to Lynn Street and show a mix of different facades and designs from this period.
This district began in the 1870s as a commercial area and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. The buildings document the growth of High Street from an early trading center through the 20th century.
The buildings here were designed by well-known local architects and show different styles that developed over time. When you walk around, you can see how taste and building methods changed from one era to another.
You can walk through this area and see all the buildings and their architectural details from the street. The best time to explore is during business hours, when the streets are active and many shops and offices are open.
Some buildings received tax credits for historic restoration but still appeared on a list of endangered landmarks. This shows the challenge of keeping older buildings alive in the city while preserving their original structure.
