Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Arboretum, State park and botanical garden in Nebraska City, United States.
Arbor Lodge is an estate spanning about 65 acres with a substantial Colonial Revival mansion containing 52 rooms and Victorian furnishings at its center. The surrounding grounds hold diverse gardens and wooded sections that showcase many tree and shrub varieties throughout the property.
The property started in 1855 as a simple four-room house, which was later enlarged and transformed into an impressive residence over the decades. After its founder passed away, his son gave the estate to Nebraska in 1923, where it has remained as a protected historical site.
The place carries the vision of a man who believed trees could transform the landscape and community life across the plains. You can sense this purpose as you walk through the grounds where different plant species were chosen with intention and care.
The grounds are open year-round and free to explore without admission fees, making it easy to visit the gardens and forests at any time. The mansion interior requires separate arrangements, so check opening hours in advance if you plan to tour inside the residence.
The arboretum holds about 270 different tree and shrub varieties, including specimens documented as the largest of their kind in the state. These notable plants are marked with bronze identification plaques that help visitors spot them as they walk through the property.
