Astor Library, Research library building in East Village, Manhattan, United States
The Astor Library building features German-influenced Rundbogenstil architecture with red brick stories, brownstone trim, and rounded arched windows throughout its facade.
John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest American in 1848, allocated 400,000 dollars in his will to establish this library, which opened its doors in 1854.
The library served as a reference center with over 80,000 volumes at its opening, attracting scholars, presidents, and international visitors including the Prince of Wales.
The building underwent two expansions by architects Griffith Thomas and Thomas Stent, who maintained the original architectural design while increasing the space.
The entrance features a Pompeian vestibule with colored marble pedestals displaying white marble busts of ancient Greek and Roman philosophers.
