Bar Building, historic commercial building in New York, United States
The Bar Building is a ten-story commercial structure made of brick and stone, completed in 1926 in White Plains and rising 125 feet (38 meters) tall. Its exterior blends straightforward business architecture with decorative touches inspired by castle gates and windows, featuring detailed brickwork and special clay tiles.
Designed by architect Benjamin Levitan and built by the Court Realty Company in 1926, the building was created as a strong business center for the growing city. When completed, it was the tallest building in White Plains and marked the area's early development in the 20th century.
The building got its name from the lawyers who worked there and operated near the courthouse downtown. Over time, architects, real estate agents, and insurance brokers also set up offices in it, making it a hub for many professional groups.
The building sits in downtown White Plains at 199 Main Street in an active area with shops, offices, and busy streets. It is easy to find on foot and stands near other important historic buildings like the courthouse, Kennedy Building, and City Hall.
A rooftop area with castle-like battlement design crowns the top floor, featuring windows that were once glazed but are now filled with brick. In the early 2000s, the building nearly faced demolition until preservation advocates, including the animation company working upstairs, worked together to protect it and get it listed on the national register in 2007.
