The wilderness spans 5,973 acres of forested land with steep slopes, rocky bluffs, and V-shaped creek drainages within Shawnee National Forest.
The Illinois Wilderness Act of 1990 designated this area for preservation after decades of agricultural use and forest regeneration since the 1930s.
This natural reserve maintains remnants of early American settlements, including old homesteads, fruit orchards, and historic cemeteries within its boundaries.
Visitors can explore the wilderness through numerous hiking trails, with Hutchins Creek providing water sources during outdoor activities.
The wilderness contains a spring-fed waterway, Hutchins Creek, which carved an unusually wide, flat valley through the Ozark landscape.
