Little Grand Canyon, National Natural Landmark in Jackson County, Illinois
Little Grand Canyon is a protected natural landmark in Jackson County featuring deep sandstone canyons with waterfalls that flow seasonally and year-round. The terrain showcases layered geological formations carved through the landscape within the boundaries of Shawnee National Forest.
The site earned National Natural Landmark status in 1980, giving it official protection. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built stone steps on the trails to improve access through the difficult terrain.
Native American tribes maintained connections to this land before its designation as a National Natural Landmark in February 1980.
The trail system involves a substantial elevation drop from the trailhead to the canyon floor, so sturdy footwear and good fitness help make the hike easier. Basic facilities include a picnic area and pit toilet, so visitors should plan accordingly and bring what they need for the day.
In the 1930s, the area earned the evocative name Hanging Gardens of Egypt because wildflowers bloomed abundantly across the rock formations and ledges. Though the name faded from common use, the flowering plants that inspired it still appear throughout the canyon during their growing season.
