Bald Knob Cross, Monument on Bald Knob Mountain, Alto Pass, Illinois, United States.
The Bald Knob Cross is a white cross standing 111 feet tall on a hilltop in Alto Pass with horizontal arms extending 63 feet, resting on a foundation of 730 tons of reinforced concrete. The structure rises prominently from the landscape and is visible from great distances.
The cross was completed in 1963 following the selection of the location during an Easter service in 1936 by Wayman Presley and Reverend William Lirely. The construction was the result of a long-term initiative to create a monument of regional significance.
The granite base displays four inscriptions - Peace, Hope, Faith, and Charity - representing universal values that speak to people of different faiths. These symbols shape how visitors experience the site and give it deeper meaning.
The monument is accessible via Bald Knob Road in Alto Pass and features a welcome center with information and souvenirs available for visitors. Plan time to explore the surroundings and take in the view from the top.
The illuminated cross is visible at night from roughly 50 miles away, serving as a navigation point for many people across the region. Its brightness makes it an unexpected landmark recognized far beyond the immediate area.
