Shryock Auditorium is a neoclassical building at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale that seats about 1,200 people. The interior features three floors, a grand stage, and excellent acoustics designed for professional performances.
The building was completed in 1918 after the Illinois General Assembly approved funding in 1915. Architect James B. Dibelka designed the structure in the neoclassical style for the growing university community.
The venue hosts regular classical music performances, theater productions, and lectures that matter to university life. It serves as a center for artistic activity on campus and draws visitors from across the region.
The building houses a large pipe organ with over 3,300 pipes visible from the upper gallery. Modern lighting and electrical systems were updated between 2002 and 2014 to support current performance standards.
The space features a notable pipe organ installed in 1918 that continues to be used for performances. This historical instrument is a rare example of early 20th century musical machines still played regularly.
