Bayernhof Music Museum, Musical instrument museum in O'Hara Township, US.
The Bayernhof Music Museum is a musical instrument museum housed in a large German-style mansion in O'Hara Township, Pennsylvania, overlooking the Allegheny River Valley. The building holds a collection of self-playing mechanical instruments displayed across multiple furnished rooms throughout the house.
The mansion was built in 1982 by Charles Brown Jr., who spent years gathering a large collection of mechanical musical instruments. After his death, he left the property and the entire collection to the public, and the museum opened in the early 2000s.
The collection focuses on mechanical instruments from the 1800s and early 1900s, including orchestrions, music boxes, and self-playing organs, all of which are demonstrated live during tours. Hearing them play inside the furnished rooms of the house gives the visit a very different feel from a typical museum.
Tours must be booked several weeks ahead, and children under 12 are not admitted. The entire visit takes place in a group with a guide, as the house is not open for self-guided access.
Beneath the mansion lies an artificial cave that Brown had built for his own use, which is now part of the tour route. The house also has a rooftop observatory that Brown used to pursue his interest in astronomy.
