Senator Robert D. Fleming Bridge, Truss road bridge connecting Pittsburgh and Sharpsburg, United States.
The Senator Robert D. Fleming Bridge is a steel road bridge that crosses the Allegheny River between Pittsburgh and Sharpsburg. It features four traffic lanes and uses a Warren deck truss configuration with cantilever design.
The bridge was completed in 1962 by the American Bridge Company, replacing an earlier steel bridge from 1901. A wooden structure had previously existed at this location since 1856.
The bridge carries the name of Robert D. Fleming, a Pennsylvania state senator who represented Pittsburgh's northeastern communities during the mid-20th century. His name reflects the local political importance of this region.
The bridge connects 62nd Street with Butler Street and PA Route 28, enabling traffic flow between Pittsburgh and Sharpsburg. It provides clearance of about 51 feet (15 meters) above the water for river vessels.
A 60 meter section of the bridge was damaged and buckled in 1981 due to a nearby warehouse fire. Repairs took about two years and required extensive reinforcement work.
