Beasley Mounds Site, Archaeological site in Smith County, Tennessee
The Beasley Mounds Site is an archaeological area in Tennessee featuring several earth mounds of varying sizes built about 600 years ago. The grounds also include burial areas, residential zones, and structures for community gatherings.
The grounds were settled between the 14th and early 15th centuries as part of a larger Mississippian community. Archaeological digs beginning in the 1890s uncovered pottery, tools, and art objects from that era.
The site displays stone statuary from the Mississippian period that visitors can observe as they walk through the grounds. These works reveal the religious and social practices of the people who lived here.
The grounds sit on a bluff with steep slopes, so wear sturdy footwear when exploring. Allow plenty of time to walk among the different mounds and zones while taking in information about the excavations.
Two small stone mounds positioned outside the palisade ring on the bluff edge resemble structures found at other Mississippian sites further north. This unusual pattern suggests trade connections or cultural exchange between different communities.
