Belmont Cricket Club, Cricket club in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Belmont Cricket Club was a sporting facility in West Philadelphia located at the intersection of 49th Street and Chester Avenue. The grounds featured tennis courts separated from cricket fields by rows of trees.
The club was founded in 1874 and remained one of four principal cricket establishments shaping Philadelphia's sporting landscape. It operated until 1914 during the formative years of American cricket.
The grounds drew spectators who arrived on foot, by coach, wagon, and bicycle to watch matches and gather socially. It served as a meeting place where players and visitors regularly connected throughout the sporting season.
The grounds were located in a densely populated neighborhood and easily reached on foot. Visitors should know the site is no longer an active sporting venue and has long since served other purposes.
American cricket champion Bart King played for the club from 1893 to 1913 and earned its reputation in cricket history. His lengthy career there made him a legend of early American cricket.
