Belmont Estate, Colonial estate in Elkridge, Maryland.
Belmont Estate is a historic property in Elkridge featuring a Georgian-style mansion completed in 1738 with later architectural additions reflecting different design periods. The 68-acre grounds include formal garden spaces, water features, and wooded areas that define the landscape.
The property was acquired in 1732 by Caleb Dorsey Jr. as a wedding gift and rapidly became a center for iron production along Patapsco River tributaries. The family established one of the region's major industrial operations during this period.
The property served as a residence for prominent families who displayed their connections to early American leadership through their art collections. These possessions reveal how wealthy planters valued European artistic traditions during the colonial period.
The grounds are currently maintained by County Parks and operate primarily for conferences, private events, and educational programs. Visitors should check ahead about access availability, as much of the property may be reserved for scheduled events or programs.
The grounds contain the burial site of a renowned steeplechase horse that belonged to Howard Bruce, a previous owner of the property. This unusual memorial speaks to the personal bond wealthy residents formed with their prized animals.
