Ben Franklin House, edificio de apartamentos histórico ubicado en 834 Chestnut Street en Center City de la ciudad de Filadelfia, Estados Unidos
The Ben Franklin House is a former hotel in Philadelphia that now contains apartments and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1925, the structure features a grand two-story lobby with painted ceilings and fluted columns, a large ballroom, and a dining room with a vaulted ceiling.
The building occupies the site of the Continental Hotel, built between 1857 and 1860 and famous for being among the first in the country to have elevators. After demolition in 1924, the Ben Franklin House was designed by Horace Trumbauer in 1925 as one of the last major hotels built in Philadelphia before the Great Depression.
The building is named after Benjamin Franklin, a key figure in Philadelphia's history. Walking through the ornate lobby with its painted ceiling and fluted columns, visitors encounter the visual legacy of when this was one of the city's grand gathering places.
The building now houses apartments at ground level and upper floors with various unit sizes, including fully furnished options for short-term stays. Located in central Philadelphia, the property offers easy access to city streets and surrounding neighborhoods.
A lantern still hangs at the building's north entrance, originating from Abraham Lincoln's balcony at the earlier Continental Hotel that stood on this site. Architect Trumbauer reportedly designed the new building to include a balcony in the same location, preserving this historical connection.
