C. Fred Johnson Park Carousel, Historic carousel in Johnson City, United States.
The C. Fred Johnson Park Carousel is a wooden carousel housed in a two-story pavilion with 18 sides in Johnson City. The structure is topped by a six-sided cupola that covers the entire ride.
Built in 1923 by the Allan Herschell Company, it is one of six mechanical rides donated by Endicott Johnson Corporation president George F. Johnson. This collection of attractions came from a single generous donation to the community.
The carousel displays 72 jumping horses arranged in rows, preserving the original mechanical design from the early 20th century. Visitors can observe how this antique ride still operates with its crafted details and traditional workmanship.
The carousel is located within C. Fred Johnson Park and occupies a small dedicated space. The pavilion provides shelter from the weather, and the structure is easy to explore since everything is concentrated on a central site.
The carousel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 as part of a multiple property submission that honored several carousels in the region. This official recognition highlights it as a significant example of early 20th-century mechanical entertainment.
