Endicott Square Deal Arch
Endicott Square Deal Arch, Historic welcome arch in Endicott, United States
The Endicott Square Deal Arch is a Classical Revival structure that spans across Main Street in Broome County. The monument features ornamental details and sits as a central landmark within the town's streetscape.
The arch was built in 1920 by employees of the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Company as a tribute to their employer George F. Johnson. In 1995, engineers dismantled and fully reconstructed it with additional materials to accommodate road expansion.
The arch symbolizes the bond between an industrial employer and the local workforce that shaped the town. It reflects how deeply the shoe business was woven into Endicott's identity and everyday life.
The arch stands on Main Street east of Vestal Avenue and is freely accessible to visitors at any time. Daytime visits offer the best view of its architectural features and the surrounding street.
The arch was designed and constructed by factory workers themselves rather than professional architects or contractors. This makes it a rare example of workers taking direct action to shape their town's appearance.
