Cass Building, Office building in Detroit, United States
Cass Building at 455 West Fort Street is an office structure with a modern glass curtain wall that extends across five floors. The facade features a clean, functional design that stands out in the downtown landscape.
Originally built in 1910 as a warehouse, the structure received a major renovation in 1972. The architectural firm Smith, Hinchman and Grylls redesigned it at that time to serve as their main office.
The building expresses International Style principles through its minimalist design, clean lines, and extensive use of glass and steel throughout its facade. These materials and forms shape how the structure appears and how people experience its modern presence in the downtown area.
The structure is located near the Fort/Cass Detroit People Mover Station, making it easily accessible by public transportation. Its downtown location provides convenient access to Cobo Center and other nearby amenities.
The north and west facades feature a specialized framing system where four glass panes connect at corners using x-shaped brackets. This construction method creates a floating appearance that makes the facade look light and open.
