Fort Shelby Hotel, Historic skyscraper hotel in Downtown Detroit, United States
The Fort Shelby Hotel spans 27 stories with classical revival architecture, featuring marble interiors and elaborate plasterwork in the Crystal Ballroom.
The hotel opened in 1917 with 450 rooms, and underwent a major expansion in 1927 adding another 450 rooms designed by architect Albert Kahn.
The Rainbow Room hosted performances by experimental jazz musician Sun Ra during the 1970s when the hotel transformed into a youth-oriented establishment.
The renovated property now operates as DoubleTree Suites, offering 203 guest rooms, 56 apartments, and 21,000 square feet of conference space.
The building remained completely abandoned for over three decades until a 90-million-dollar renovation brought it back to operation in 2008.
