AT&T Michigan Headquarters, Art Deco skyscraper in Downtown Detroit, United States
The AT&T Michigan Headquarters is an Art Deco skyscraper in downtown Detroit, standing at the intersection of 1st Street, Cass Avenue, State Street, and Michigan Avenue. The complex is made up of several connected buildings that together form a single, continuous mass along the city streets.
The first building on this site went up in 1919, and a large addition followed in 1928 as the telephone business in the region grew quickly. Further construction came in the following decades, with the last major expansion completed in 1973.
The facade is covered in bronze panels showing lightning bolts, bells, and symbols tied to early telephone communication, reflecting how the industry once carried a sense of wonder. These details make the building one of the few places in Detroit where corporate identity and decorative art come together so visibly.
The complex sits in the heart of downtown Detroit and can be reached on foot from most central points, with public transit stops close by. The surrounding streets, especially State Street, offer the clearest views of the bronze details on the outer walls.
The building was designed with concealed floors and structural supports intended to allow future floors to be added on top without major disruption to the existing structure. This kind of long-range planning was built directly into the walls and foundations from the start.
