Farwell Building, Commercial building in Downtown Detroit, United States
The Farwell Building is an eight-story commercial structure in downtown Detroit distinguished by extensive glass sections across its facade. Ionic pilasters frame the corners and central entrance, giving the rectangular form a balanced classical appearance.
The structure was completed in 1915 following designs by architect Harrie W. Bonnah. It was named after Jesse Farwell, who built his fortune through real estate and shipping ventures.
The building honors Jesse Farwell, a prominent businessman from the early 1900s. Inside, visitors can see intricate craftsmanship in the vaulted ceiling made with thousands of glass pieces and ornate brass elevator doors.
The building reopened in 2019 after major renovations and sits on Griswold Street in downtown. Today it houses apartments, offices, and restaurants that visitors can explore within and around the structure.
In the 1970s, the owner donated the building to the Detroit Historical Society to prevent demolition. This action later led to its recognition as a National Historic Place.
