Charlotte School of Law, for-profit law school in Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte School of Law was a private law school in Charlotte, North Carolina, founded in 2006 and closed in 2017. The school occupied a downtown building with classrooms, a law library, and an appellate courtroom designed for hands-on legal training.
The school opened in 2006 and received American Bar Association accreditation in 2011, becoming North Carolina's largest law school by 2013. However, bar passage rates fell dramatically from over 87 percent in 2010 to around 45 percent by 2016, leading to loss of accreditation and closure in 2017.
Located downtown, the school was near courts and law firms, making it accessible for practical legal work. The campus building provided classrooms and study spaces but had no on-site housing or recreation facilities.
The school paid some students to delay taking their bar exams to improve passage rates and maintain accreditation. When it closed suddenly in August 2017 mid-semester, about 350 students were left without degrees or refunds, prompting lawsuits against school leadership.
