Cleveland Cultural Gardens, Historic garden district in Cleveland, United States
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens stretch along Martin Luther King Boulevard and East Boulevard as a series of 36 separate garden spaces. These landscaped areas feature artwork, sculptures, and informational plaques documenting the contributions of different nations and cultures.
The first garden began in 1916 as a Shakespeare Garden, which later inspired the creation of the Cultural Garden League in 1925. This initial effort expanded into the larger project of honoring multiple cultural communities in the city.
Each garden displays monuments and sculptures honoring the artistic achievements of different communities. As you walk through, you notice how the landscaping and artwork reflect the values and traditions of the cultures they represent.
The gardens are accessible via paved pathways that wind through the grounds, making them easy to navigate on foot. Plan time to walk through several spaces, and look for signs marking each cultural section as you explore the area.
Several gardens contain replicas of significant architectural elements from their home countries, such as a baptismal font in the Croatian garden. These features show how designers tried to bring authentic cultural details to the space.
