Cordell–Lorenz Observatory

The Cordell-Lorenz Observatory is a research facility at Sewanee with multiple telescopes of varying sizes for astronomical work. The equipment includes instruments ranging from smaller to larger apertures, supporting different kinds of sky observations.

The facility houses a refractor telescope built by Alvan Clark in 1897 that remains in working condition today. This historic instrument stands in the main dome and continues to serve for observations.

The observatory serves as an educational center where students and researchers study celestial phenomena and conduct astronomical investigations throughout the year.

Researchers here have discovered 28 minor planets, which represents a significant contribution to astronomical research. These discoveries demonstrate the important scientific work that has taken place at this location.
