Crowley Cheese Factory

The Crowley Cheese Factory sits in a wooden structure with a gabled roof and clapboard siding in Mount Holly. The building holds both the production area where cheese is made and a shop where visitors can buy the finished products.

The Crowley family started making cheese in their farm kitchen in 1824, then Winfield Crowley built the commercial factory building in 1881. This shift moved production from a home operation to an organized business in the local area.

Cheesemakers here use raw milk and hand-based techniques to produce cheese without additives or preservatives, keeping the original family recipe alive. These traditional methods shape how work happens inside the factory and connect visitors to old craftsmanship.

The factory opens on weekdays and Saturday, giving visitors multiple times to stop by and see the operation. The building sits on a named road, making it easy to find and locate.

The cheddar made here goes through a special curd rinsing process that creates a creamier and moister cheese with lower acidity. This technique sets the product apart from standard cheddar made elsewhere.
