Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary, Protected wildlife area in Marshfield, Massachusetts.
The Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected wildlife area in Marshfield that encompasses grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands spread across the landscape. The property includes a network of trails that wind through these different habitats along the Green Harbor River.
The land was owned by statesman Daniel Webster from 1832 to 1852 before later serving as an agricultural estate. Massachusetts Audubon Society acquired the property in 1984 and established it as a protected wildlife sanctuary.
The sanctuary maintains purple martin nesting gourds near Webster Pond, supporting a local colony of these migratory birds through dedicated conservation efforts.
Visitors can walk the trails daily from sunrise to sunset and explore the grounds at their own pace. Some paths are designed to be accessible for people of different abilities.
The sanctuary contains observation blinds positioned throughout the property, allowing visitors to watch wildlife in their natural habitat without causing disturbance. These structures offer a quiet way to observe animals from a close vantage point.
