Old Scituate Light
Old Scituate Light, Historic lighthouse in Scituate, United States.
Old Scituate Light is a white cylindrical tower with an attached keeper's residence perched on the rocky Massachusetts shoreline. The structure stands about 15 meters tall and was equipped with a rotating beacon that once warned ships across vast distances.
Built in 1811, the lighthouse was constructed to protect vessels from dangerous coastal waters. It became an essential navigational aid for ships traveling this stretch of the Massachusetts coast.
The lighthouse reflects how this coastal community relied on maritime navigation for survival and trade. It remains a symbol of protection for the waters that shaped the town's identity.
The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset, with the best views of the tower and coastline accessible from the water level areas. Wear sturdy footwear since the rocky terrain can become slippery, especially after rain.
During the War of 1812, two young daughters of a keeper helped save local vessels from British soldiers by playing fife and drum to create confusion. Their quick thinking made them unlikely heroes of that conflict.
