Double Ditch, Archaeological site in Bismarck, United States.
Double Ditch contains earth lodges, storage pits, and two concentric fortification rings spanning across 10 acres along the Missouri River bank.
The Mandan people inhabited this fortified settlement from 1450 to 1785, establishing a population of two thousand residents at its peak period.
The site reveals the architectural methods and daily activities of the Mandan through discovered pottery, tools, and evidence of agricultural practices.
The State Historical Society of North Dakota maintains the site, offering self-guided tours with interpretive signs explaining archaeological discoveries.
Four different fortification ditches indicate the settlement changed size multiple times, reflecting population variations from 2000 to 400 inhabitants.
