Dill's Tavern, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
Dill's Tavern is a sandstone building with two and a half stories built around 1794 in an L-shaped configuration. The structure received major additions around 1800, 1820, and 1910, displaying early American architectural styles throughout its form.
Matthew Dill started farming the land in 1742 and built a wooden tavern to serve travelers. His grandson John Dill constructed the stone building around 1794, which Leonard Eichelberger tripled in size in 1800, adding a distillery and wagon-building workshop.
The tavern served as a social hub where travelers and local business owners gathered to eat, drink, and exchange news. The rooms inside reflect how such establishments functioned as important meeting places in frontier communities.
Guided tours are offered from April through October on Sundays at set times. Groups and schools can arrange private tours by appointment during other months for a more personalized experience.
The site maintains working craft workshops, including a blacksmith shop and wagon-building shop, where volunteers demonstrate traditional techniques. These active workshops allow visitors to watch old trades in action, making the historical experience more tangible and authentic.
