Elias Hinshaw House

The Elias Hinshaw House is a brick building in Knightstown with a distinctive four-story central tower topped by a mansard roof. Decorative brackets run along the cornices, giving the structure its characteristic appearance.

The house was built in 1883 and entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This recognition honored its importance as an example of Second Empire style from that period.

The residence reflects tastes that became popular in late 19th-century America, when French-inspired architecture attracted many wealthy homeowners. Visitors can see today how this European style was adapted in a small American town.

The building is located on Main Street and is easy to explore from the outside. The structure has largely retained its original form and still clearly displays its original architectural features.

The house blends Second Empire style with Italian Villa architectural elements, an unusual combination for the region. This fusion makes it a rare example of architectural experimentation in the American Midwest.
