Emory and Henry University

Emory and Henry is a university in Virginia that spans 335 acres (135 hectares) in the Appalachian highlands, combining historic buildings with modern facilities. The grounds include green spaces, paths connecting buildings, and a separate Health Sciences Campus in the nearby town of Marion.

Methodist leaders founded the institution in 1836 as an educational center in the mountains. The main building served as a hospital for Confederate soldiers from 1861 to 1865 during the Civil War.

The campus blends traditional brick Gothic architecture with newer additions in the Appalachian highlands, serving as an academic home for nearly two centuries. Students encounter a Methodist heritage visible in the architecture and the emphasis on humanities education.

The main campus sits in a rural area about 30 miles (48 km) north of Bristol on Interstate 81. Visitors can walk freely around the grounds and visit the McGlothlin Center for performances and exhibitions.

The institution officially changed from college to university status in August 2023, broadening its academic classification. More than 90 programs are now offered, including specialized tracks in nursing and health sciences at the second location.
