Evergreen Cemetery, cemetery in Menomonie, Wisconsin
Evergreen Cemetery is a large burial ground in Menomonie, Wisconsin, with over 1,100 graves in its oldest section. The grounds span about 24 acres with winding paths, native trees, and monuments spanning from the 1800s to today.
The cemetery was established in 1873 when the Knapp, Stout & Company lumber business donated the land and two landscape architects designed it in English Romantic style. The Civil War monument was erected in 1901 by the Women's Relief Corps to honor local soldiers who served from 1861 to 1865.
The cemetery reflects the heritage of Menomonie's earliest settlers. Many gravestones tell of Norwegian and German families who shaped the community.
The cemetery is open during daylight hours but closes between 10 pm and 7 am. Visitors should respect the quiet atmosphere and stay on marked paths, as this is an active burial ground and memorial site.
One of the headstones carries the unusual inscription 'shot by Mormons', a rare record of a conflict from the 1800s preserved on the grounds. These and other unexpected stories in the inscriptions offer visitors a glimpse into extraordinary events from the past.
