The zoo was founded in 1945 on the grounds of a former estate called La Vaquera. It developed into a place for animal care and nature education in Caracas.

The zoo is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with no admission fee. Guided tours of the insectarium are available to help visitors learn about insect diversity.
