St. Thomas Cathedral, Catholic cathedral near Bolívar Square, Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela
St. Thomas Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral in the historic center of Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, built in a neoclassical style. It has a tall central nave, two matching front towers, and a plain interior with arched passages running along each side.
Work on the building began in 1764 and continued for several decades before it was formally completed in the mid-19th century. The long construction period reflected the limited resources available in the colonial city at the time.
The cathedral is named after the apostle Thomas and sits at the heart of religious life in Ciudad Bolívar. On feast days, people gather on the steps and inside the nave to pray together, filling the space with candles and quiet ceremony.
The cathedral stands right on the main square of Ciudad Bolívar and is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the historic center. Visiting on a weekday morning tends to be quieter, as weekends and holy days draw larger crowds for services.
Bullet marks are still visible on one of the outer walls of the cathedral, left by an armed conflict in the city's past. They were never repaired and remain there today, easy to spot if you walk slowly around the building.
