Black River, Major tributary river of the Red River in northwestern Vietnam.
The Black River flows through Lai Chau, Son La, and Hoa Binh provinces before joining the Red River, originating from Yunnan in China. The waterway travels approximately 910 kilometers across mountainous terrain.
The river long served as a vital route for trade and transport across northwestern Vietnam. Construction of the Hoa Binh Dam in 1994 fundamentally transformed it into a massive reservoir.
The name Song Da comes from the Tai language, referring to the dark brownish water that flows through the region. Local communities have long adapted their daily lives around this river and its resources.
The area is shaped by several dams, including the Son La Dam completed in 2012, that supply power to numerous communities. Best access comes via provincial roads that wind through the valley.
The reservoir at Hoa Binh is Vietnam's largest man-made lake, located just 60 kilometers southwest of Hanoi. This body of water supplies the region with electricity while also supporting local agricultural production.
