Van Don International Airport, Airport in Vietnam
Van Don International Airport is a modern airport facility on Van Don Island serving Quang Ninh Province, with separate terminals for domestic and international flights. The airport includes multiple check-in counters, retail shops, restaurants, banking services, and free internet throughout the terminal.
Construction began in 2016 and the airport opened in December 2018 as Vietnam's first privately operated airport terminal. Its opening transformed travel options to the Halong region by providing direct air access instead of requiring long overland travel from Hanoi.
The airport's design draws inspiration from Halong Bay's natural landscape, featuring sail-like structures and artwork depicting local scenery. Visitors immediately experience how the building itself celebrates the coastal character of the region through its architectural elements and decorative details.
The airport is located about 50 kilometers from Halong Bay, with travel time to the bay area taking 30 to 45 minutes by expressway. Free bus tickets provide connections from the airport to Halong City and surrounding destinations, with shuttle service departing every 90 minutes.
As Vietnam's first privately operated airport terminal, it revolutionized regional air travel and received recognition in 2025 as one of the world's best new airports. The architectural design with sail-like structures was intentionally created to connect travelers to the beauty of Halong Bay from the moment they arrive.
