Phu Quoc Prison, Military prison in Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam.
Phu Quoc Prison was a military facility on the island comprising detention areas, underground passages, and memorial structures. The layout and passages allow visitors to understand how the complex was organized and what spaces prisoners navigated.
French colonial authorities built the facility between 1949 and 1950 to hold political opponents. During the Vietnam War it later held soldiers and fighters from across the country.
The site serves as a place where visitors learn about the experiences of imprisoned fighters and soldiers through their stories. The spaces display personal items and records that reflect what daily life was like for those held here.
The site is in an accessible area of the island where you can explore the grounds at your own pace. There are shaded areas between structures, but bring water as the grounds can be hot and exposed.
In 1968 hundreds of prisoners executed an organized escape by overwhelming barriers at the perimeter. Monuments marking this event can be seen around the grounds, though visitors sometimes pass by them without noticing.
