Lower U Minh National Park, National park in Ca Mau Province, Vietnam
Lower U Minh National Park is a nature reserve in Ca Mau Province that covers Melaleuca forests and peat swamps across a large area. The landscape consists of dense trees standing in water, connected by winding waterways and wooden walkways that allow visitors to explore different parts.
The park was created in 2006 to protect the Melaleuca forests in the Mekong Delta region that were disappearing. This decision helped save one of the last intact wetland areas from further destruction.
Local people have fished and gathered honey here for generations, and you can still see them working in designated areas using traditional methods. This way of life gives the park its distinctive character and shows how fishing communities have shaped the landscape.
You will explore the park through guided tours that combine boat rides through waterways with walks on elevated paths through the forest. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as these tours take several hours and you will be exposed to both water and sun.
The park is home to rare animals like fishing cats, leopard cats, and pangolins that hunt in the peat swamps at night. These shy creatures are difficult to spot, but their presence shows how special the ecosystem is.
