Cổ Chiên Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge over Cổ Chiên River, Vietnam
The Cổ Chiên Bridge is a cable-stayed structure made of steel and concrete that crosses the Cổ Chiên River in the Mekong Delta. Its design includes multiple traffic lanes and emergency routes that serve both local transportation and the movement of agricultural goods between provinces.
The bridge was completed in 2015, marking a turning point in infrastructure development for the Mekong Delta after decades with limited river crossings. The project opened new pathways for economic connection between the provinces.
The bridge design incorporates elements of Vietnamese engineering principles while serving as a meeting point for local merchants and travelers crossing the river.
The crossing enables quick and safe passage across the river, and access is easiest during the dry season. Visitors should note that traffic can be heavy during peak hours, particularly when trucks are transporting agricultural goods.
The bridge eliminated the need for ferry services that had operated for generations, displacing traditional river transport practices. This shift fundamentally changed how communities on either side interact and conduct business with each other.
