Nhi Thien Duong Bridge, Modern bridge in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Nhi Thien Duong Bridge is a concrete road bridge in District 8 of Ho Chi Minh City, spanning the Doi Canal to connect two residential banks. The roadway is wide enough for cars and motorbikes, with a narrow sidewalk on each side for people on foot.
The bridge was built to connect District 8 to the rest of Ho Chi Minh City as the population grew rapidly in the latter half of the 20th century. Before it existed, the Doi Canal was a real barrier to movement between the two banks, slowing the development of the area.
The name Nhi Thien Duong translates roughly to "second heaven" in Vietnamese, a contrast to the working-class surroundings it crosses. Locals use the bridge daily to reach markets, schools, and small workshops on both banks of the canal.
Crossing on foot or by bicycle gives the best chance to look down at the canal and take in the surroundings without rushing. During the rainy season, the nearby streets can flood, so it is worth checking conditions before heading out.
The Doi Canal below the bridge is one of the few spots in Ho Chi Minh City where small fishing boats still move regularly, well within the city limits. Standing on the bridge, you can watch two very different speeds of daily life happening at the same time, one on the water and one above it.
