Giác Lâm Pagoda, Buddhist temple in Tan Binh District, Vietnam.
Giác Lâm is a Buddhist temple in Ho Chi Minh City featuring three main halls arranged over approximately 65 meters, with a central ceremonial space containing numerous statues and religious artwork. This central area serves as both a prayer space and a display for devotional pieces from different periods.
The temple was founded in 1744 by a Chinese settler and received its present religious status in 1772 under a Buddhist abbot's guidance. This transition marked its shift from a dwelling place to an established sanctuary.
The temple displays religious figures from multiple traditions that visitors encounter upon entering the sanctuary. The mix of wooden and bronze sculptures creates a setting where Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and local folk deities coexist side by side.
The temple is located on Lac Long Quan Street and opens to visitors daily, with prayer times occurring at several points throughout the day. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and treat the space thoughtfully, especially when religious ceremonies are taking place.
A seven-story stupa on the grounds houses Buddhist relics within its structure. In the garden stands a tree planted from Sri Lanka in the 1950s that continues to grow there today.

Vietnam retains an architectural heritage that spans several centuries. From the Confucian temples in Hanoi to the Cham towers in the country's interior, including the imperial citadels of Hué, these structures reflect influences from Hindu, Chinese, and European traditions that have shaped the land. Each building illustrates a specific period, from the 7th century with Po Nagar's towers to modern constructions of the 20th century. The Temple of Literature in Hanoi, founded in 1070, embodies the Vietnamese educational tradition with its five successive courtyards. In Hué, the Thien Mu Pagoda has stood since 1601 with its seven-story tower rising 70 feet (21 meters) over the Parfum River. The Cham towers of Binh Dinh and Nha Trang showcase the craft of this civilization through their brick ornaments and stone sculptures. The port city of Hoi An features an architectural ensemble from the 15th century, combining Chinese, Japanese, and European styles. These sites offer a tangible journey through the country's architectural and cultural evolution.
