Quan Am Temple, Buddhist temple in Cholon, Vietnam.
Quan Am Temple is a Buddhist site in Cholon featuring several interior chambers with altars dedicated to different deities, including the Jade Emperor and Guanyin, the goddess of mercy. The structure includes a front courtyard, a main hall, and a large rear courtyard with connected spaces for prayer and contemplation.
The temple was founded in the 19th century by Hokkien immigrants who settled in the Cholon district of Ho Chi Minh City. This establishment reflected the broader wave of Chinese migration into the region during that period.
The temple mixes Buddhism, Taoism, and Chinese folk beliefs, with inscriptions written mainly in Chinese characters alongside some Vietnamese text. Visitors can watch how people light incense and leave offerings at the different altars throughout the space.
Visitors should wear loose, respectful clothing and follow local customs when entering sacred areas, such as removing shoes where appropriate. The site is best explored during quieter times when fewer people are engaged in prayer or ceremonies.
Across from the main temple stands a garden with an artificial pond featuring a statue of Guanyin standing on a lotus flower. This peaceful side area extends the spiritual space beyond the main building itself.
